Your Monthly Menopause Round Up-October

Welcome to October's Menopause Unmasked Round Up!

October is Menopause Awareness Month.

Menopause News

This year’s global theme for World Menopause Day (18th October) is lifestyle medicine, highlighting the importance of open conversations and access to support.

The focus is on how daily habits such as: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and social connection can positively influence symptoms during perimenopause and beyond, while also protecting long-term health.

While hormones play a key role, research shows that how we live day-to-day can make a real difference in how we experience menopause. Small, sustainable changes can support both body and mind through this transition.

Throughout October, I’ll be sharing practical lifestyle tips on my social media to help you feel empowered and supported on your journey.

Did you know a 30-minute brisk walk outside can boost your mood and support a healthy heart? Listen to a podcast, walk with a friend, or simply enjoy your surroundings. Not ready for 30 minutes yet? Start small, park further away or take more frequent shorter walks during the day.

Quick Tip!

Do you know the difference between perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause?

Perimenopause This is when your hormones start to fluctuate and overall levels begin to decline. It’s the stage when most symptoms occur; it can last anywhere from 4 to 10 years on average. Symptoms vary: some experience multiple mild-to-moderate symptoms, while others have just one or two symptoms that significantly impact daily life.

There are now over 50 recognised symptoms of perimenopause, and the list keeps growing. My hope is to take away the fear and dread that so often surrounds this stage.

Menopause Menopause itself is not a long phase but rather a moment in time. It is a diagnosis confirming you’ve gone 12 months without a period. This may not mean your symptoms stop at this stage.

Post-menopause From the menopause diagnosis onwards, you are considered post-menopausal for the rest of your life.

A note on HRT Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) does not delay menopause, but it can ease physical symptoms and offers long-term health protection against cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and dementia.

If HRT isn’t right for you, or you choose not to take it, there are still many ways to protect your long-term health- through lifestyle changes, nutrition, exercise, and emotional wellbeing support.

If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or simply want to understand your options more clearly, why not book a Clarity Hour with me? One hour to unmask the myths, find your confidence, and take your next steps forward.

My hope is to take away the fear and dread that so often surrounds menopause. Yes, it can be a challenging time, but with kindness, awareness, and preparation, it can also be a period of growth, strength, and self-discovery.

By unmasking the myths and sharing honest conversations, we can learn to embrace and even celebrate this stage of life. You are not alone in this journey.

What We Are Up To

Last month, I hosted my biggest in-person event yet. 27 wonderful people joined me at the Forest Arts Centre in New Milton, where I gave an introduction to all things menopause. The feedback has been incredible, and I’m so grateful to everyone who came along and shared the experience with me. Thank you!

I am still exploring ways to support the community by working alongside GP surgeries in delivering better menopause care. This is such an important area of general practice that could be adapted to meet the real needs of people navigating the menopause.

Does your surgery have it right? I’d love to hear which practices are providing great support—and where there’s room for improvement so we can raise the standard together.

Upcoming Events

I don’t have any events booked in for October, but I’m currently planning a post-menopause workshop. This will be especially for those of you who are in that stage and want support, guidance, and a space to connect. I’ll share more details soon — watch this space!
